A music critic wrote: "The elements of Vietnamese traditional music from which Hoang Van drew his inspiration are neither brutal nor easily identifiable. His works carry a luxurious character, from lyrics to melodies it is difficult to detect this or that element belongs to this or that musical tradition, always creating a surprising effect in each sentence of each work. From the Mountain Flute Sound in Ha Giang to the tunes of the Thai songs (minority ethnic group in North Vietnam) in Harvest in the fields of Dien Bien, from the rhythms of rhymes in Song of the buffalo little keeper to the rhythm of the dances of the High Plateaux (Tây Nguyên) in Tay Nguyen's Romance, from Hue's boatmen's songs to those of Quang Binh's forest workers to the tunes in To my battle field friends from Laos, each song is a prime example of Hoang Van's musical personality: subtle and profound, close and noble, pure and academic".
